How to Do a Target Receipt Lookup (3 Ways to Find Yours)

Lost your Target receipt? Here are three fast ways to find or reprint it: in the Target app with Target Circle, in your Target.com order history, or at the store using the barcode, plus what to do for gift receipts and returns.

Method 1: Find it in the Target app (fastest)

If you scanned your Target Circle barcode at checkout, paid with Target Wallet, or ordered online, the receipt is already sitting in your account.

  1. Open the Target app and sign in to your Target Circle account.
  2. Tap the account or profile icon, then open Purchases (sometimes shown as Orders & Purchases).
  3. Find the trip by date and store, and tap it to open the details.
  4. Tap View receipt or View barcode to screenshot it, save a copy, or start a return.
Tip: Scanning your Target Circle barcode (or Wallet) at the register digitizes your in-store receipt automatically, so do it every trip and you will never dig through your bag for the paper version again.

This gives you a full itemized receipt with every line item and tax, which is exactly what you need for an expense claim or your tax records.

Method 2: Target.com order history

For anything you bought online, on Target.com or in the app for pickup, delivery or shipping, the receipt lives in your order history.

  1. Go to Target.com and sign in, or open the Target app.
  2. Open Orders (or Orders & Purchases in the app).
  3. Select the order and choose View order details.
  4. From there you can view, print or save the invoice, or start a return.

Make sure you are signed into the same account you ordered with. People often end up with a second login from a guest checkout, and the order will only show under the account that placed it.

Method 3: In-store receipt lookup at the register

Did not scan Target Circle and paid in store? The purchase is not in the app, but the store can usually still find it.

  1. Head to Guest Services at the store where you bought the items.
  2. Bring the card you paid with, or a rough date and time if you paid cash.
  3. An associate can look up the transaction and reprint the receipt, or scan the original barcode if you still have any copy of it.

The barcode at the bottom of a Target receipt (the document or transaction number) uniquely identifies that purchase, so hanging onto even a faded copy makes a reprint or return much faster.

Gift receipts and returns

A few things worth knowing if the lookup is really about a return:

  • Gift receipts: You can usually generate a gift receipt from the purchase in the app, or ask Guest Services to reprint one. It shows a return barcode and the item but hides the price.
  • Returns with a card: If you paid by card, scanned Circle, or used Wallet, the store can typically find the purchase and process the return even if you have no paper receipt.
  • Returns with no proof: Returns without any receipt are handled case by case and may be limited, require ID, or come back as merchandise credit.

Target receipt lookup not working? Try this

  • Paid cash with no Target Circle scan? It is not online, so take the card (or a rough date and time) to Guest Services for a lookup or reprint.
  • Card details rejected on a lookup? Double-check the card type (debit and credit can differ) and that the store and date are exact. Even one day off can return nothing.
  • Do not see an online order? Make sure you are signed into the same account you checked out with, not a guest session.
  • Older purchase missing? App history is generous, but very old in-store trips may need a register lookup at the store.

If you also shop big-box stores for projects, the same idea applies at other retailers; here is the same kind of walkthrough for a Walmart receipt lookup.

The faster way: let Mylo grab every receipt automatically

Hunting for receipts one store at a time is the slow way. Mylo finds them for you: it scans your email inboxes and signs into the retailer accounts where receipts hide, pulls the itemized version, and matches each one to the card transaction that paid for it. Target, Walmart, Amazon, Costco, Home Depot and more, all in one place.

No new card, no manual entry. Mylo works on top of the Visa, Mastercard, or Amex you already use, tracks your loyalty points like Target Circle along the way, and syncs clean categorized expenses to QuickBooks. Free on iOS, Android, and the web.

Frequently asked questions

Can I look up a Target receipt without the card?

Yes, if you scanned Target Circle or used Target Wallet at checkout, or bought online; those purchases show in your app history without needing the card. For a cash purchase with no Circle scan, a store associate usually needs the card used, or a rough date and time, to find it at the register.

How do I get a Target gift receipt after the purchase?

Open the purchase in the Target app and look for the gift receipt option, or have an associate reprint one at Guest Services. A gift receipt shows the item and a return barcode but hides the price, which is what the recipient needs to make a return or exchange.

Can I return to Target without a receipt?

Often yes. If you used a card, Target Circle or Target Wallet, the store can usually pull the purchase and process the return without a paper receipt. Returns without any proof of purchase are handled case by case and may be limited or issued as merchandise credit.

How long does Target keep receipts?

Digital receipts tied to your Target Circle account generally stay in your purchase history for a long time, and stores can often retrieve recent in-store transactions at the register. For your own taxes, the IRS suggests keeping receipts for at least three years.
